Page 8 - Gainesville Visitors Guide

What was Gainesville like in it’s early days? The
Katy railroad had arrived in 1879 and the Santa Fe
would appear in 1887. A streetcar system with
cars pulled by mules operated in the downtown
area. An opera house would open in the 1890s.
Saloons and gambling houses also thrived in the
downtown until Prohibition was voted in 1910.

Visualize buggies and fancy carriages, wagons
hauling freight, ladies in long dresses with
parasols. Listen for the sounds of the trains
rumbling into town.
By 1927, oil had
been in the county
and automobiles
were common.
